The Boat Buying Process
Boat Tuition
Whatever your experience in boating, a new boat and a new mooring poses new questions. Our Boat Handling Package will enable you to handle your new boat in all elements confidently and safely.Whilst there is no legal requirement to obtain any boating qualifications, On-Water is committed to ensuring that everyone who buys one of our boats has the opportunity to receive the relevant and necessary training.
Coastal Water Tuition
As part of the On-Water package, the tuition provided for those who choose to moor their boat on the sea will consist of several intensive training days to quickly bring you up to a level of competency to confidently navigate your boat to and from your mooring on coastal waters.
This training provides an excellent grounding for entry into one of the recognised RYA sailing courses.
Boats for lakes
1 - 2 days intensive training will be sufficient for both yachts and motorboats.
Motor Boats - You will learn how to handle a motorboat, as well as knots, engine checks, safety, berthing, turning, rules of the road and man overboard.
Sailing Boats - As above for motor boats and will also include in the day familiarisation with the rigging, putting the sails up, selecting the right sails, tacking and jibing.
Whether you use your boat or the sailing schools you will be taking the boat off a mooring, sailing a course and then returning to the mooring.
Boats to be sailed on rivers / canals
1 days training will be sufficient for you to learn how to handle a river cruiser using your boat or the training schools. You will learn all about knots, engine checks, safety, berthing, turning, rules of the road, man overboard and how to operate locks.
The Royal Yachting Association
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has a recognised level of competency for sailing or motoring on the sea. There are many RYA approved schools around the country that can train all prospective seamen/women to the following levels:
Competent Crew
This is the basic introductory course for both the complete beginner, and those who have had some experience of either dinghy sailing or cruising.
The course is planned to give you as much fun and enjoyment as possible whilst learning about personal safety and seamanship.
Day Skipper
At this level you will learn basic practical skippering techniques and will be given the opportunity to practice boat handling in a variety of mooring situations.
Previous experience necessary for Day Skipper is five days sailing, 100 sea miles and four night hours.
Coastal Skipper
This advanced course is for skippers who already have a practical ability to Day Skipper level and has spent a minimum of 15 days on board a yacht and logged 300 sea miles, 8 night hours and 2 days as skipper.
The advanced course concentrates on the techniques and skills required to skipper a yacht on longer distance passages, involving more complex decision making, passage planning, pilotage, advanced navigation, collision regulations and watch keeping.
Yachtmaster
Yachtmaster includes advanced passage planning, navigation and skippering techniques, man overboard recovery, meteorology, close quarter handling (power and sail), in addition you need to have a thorough knowledge of collision regulations, lights, shapes and sound signals.
Following from yachtmaster is an Ocean Yacht Master course.
RYA International Certificate of Competence
As from 1st January 1995 new regulations came into force for the issue of an ICC, which is now required by most European countries. Students are now required to demonstrate their boat handling and navigation abilities and answer simple questions on lights, sound signals and collision regulations.
